You don't have to be an aging Hippy to appreciate Earth Day, the world-wide nonpartisan day of activism on behalf of our planet. More than one-billion people annually participate in Earth Day activities, making it the largest secular civic event in the world.

To celebrate the 40th anniversary, merchants and organizations are joining together to make April 22 the biggest environmental event in history.

Businesses and organizations are a planning a wide range of promotional and support events. Here's a roundup of 40 ways to celebrate the 40th Earth Day.

    DEALS

The products are exactly the same: Amazon has just streamlined the packaging to eliminate hard-plastic clamshell cases.

    2. Avatar DVD
Director James Cameron has said his Oscar-nominated movie Avatar is a celebration of the natural world and how wonderful it is on Earth. • I think you meant "Astronomer" for 18. NASA Amateur Astrology Challenge. Astrology is not a science.

      • Traveling to a meeting is a great way to pack a big ol'carbon footprint along with your 3 oz bottle of shampoo. So, of course having online meetings is a great way to save some green (trees) and some green (moolah). Fuze Meeting is giving away free meetings for 3 attendees (no expiration) if you fan/like them on Facebook. http://fuze.me/5VF

      • Isn't it ironic that vendors are promoting Earth Day with big sales? The greenest choice we can make is not to buy something we don't need. If these stores really wanted to promote Earth Day, they could close for the day, or sell on essentials. Celebrate Earth Day and save money buy spending nothing on nothing! :)
