Place Your Bets: 40 Gut-Busting Restaurant Challenges for Free Food

    7/5/2010 in Trends | 92 Comments

Gamblers betting Joey "Jaws" Chestnut would sweep "Nathan's Hot Dog Eating Contest" this year weren't disappointed. The competitive eater gobbled his way to a fourth consecutive championship in the food fest, held every 4th of July on Brooklyn's Coney Island.

What bookies couldn't predict was that former world competitive-eating record holder Takeru Kobayashi, who was barred from participating in Sunday's contest due to contract disputes, would be arrested for rushing the stage and demanding some boiled meat slurry, STAT!

Of course, Nathan's isn't the only place to find gourmands gorging themselves for fame, glory and free food. Amateur gluttons and the restaurants that serve them are found across the country.

We researched 40 gut-busting restaurant challenges for those seeking free food and entertainment. A couple words of advice: Don't fill up on bread and remember foods dunked in liquids slide down easier.

And if you scope out any ringers, let us know so we can call our bookie.

      • Adjectives may be hyphenated by preference: "quarter-pound burger", "half-a-pound block of cheese". Quantities are not hyphenated: "15 pounds of beef", not "15-pounds of beef" Multi-word quantities seem to be a gray area: "half a pound of cheese", or "half-a-pound of cheese"?

      • Sockatume: Do you spend all day correcting hyphenation errors on the web? Because you're going to be a very busy, very lonely, pitiful person. Seriously, find something to do with your life.

      • I've been to the Big Texan. They told me about this trucker who would come in every few months for his 72 ounce steak. He'd starve himself for a couple of days, maybe just drinking alot of liquid to keep his stomach from shrinking. He come in to the restaraunt, ate the whole meal in about 45 minutes, and asked for dessert. Don't mess with Texas.

      • Actually, I only took about 2 minutes out of my day to point out hyphenation errors. It's not just a nit-pick, the correct usage makes it a heck of a lot easier to read, because you use a different beat and emphasis when the term is hyphenated. I did indeed hypercorrect "grey", thanks for pointing that out. I didn't realise that American English used the British spelling in that situation. Back on topic, I think I could take those pancakes. I'm sure I've eaten more than that in the past without ill effect.

He decided to take the 72 ounce steak challenge, which at the time cost only $50, I think. Well, he managed to eat the whole mess of food! It grossed me out to the max. And all he wanted afterwards was a liter bottle of Pepsi. And he drank that whole thing, too. Wow.

I took a look at some of these pictures and couldn't imagine that kind of food intake in such a short period of time. Your metabolism would have to be through the roof so you quickly digest while you eat. Oh well...I guess some people have different skills than others...LOL...

      • "This article sums up everything that is wrong with America." - posted by Mario Stronzo. You, sir, are a pompous ass if you think some fringe article, quite clearly describing restaurant experiences one may have that are very much not the norm, sum up anything aside from what some journalist did with several hours of his or her time. The fact that you took what you did from this article, rather than amusement (as was quite likely intended), says a lot more about you than an entire country upon which you are generalizing. Your attitude sums up quite a bit about what is wrong with human judgment, you holier than thou idiot.

      • it amazed me at the lack of sense of humor of some people and your first comment was HAITI-feel remorse for them, but look what America is contributing.. and whst the United Nations is doing..the N should be made into a hamburger hamlet and the United Natiions building moved to Haiti )it could be rebuilt there) we do not need to host something where we are not appreciated. Also, what about our American Warriors fighting for OUR freedom to e mail our comments. Where are the stars out there promioting thiis.. huh lCloney etc.

      • I think that to complain about "American gluttony" is missing the point. Most of the people that have a go at any of these challenges fail but its the fact that they try in the first place that I find just brilliant. I'm a New Zealander and I'm not aware of anywhere in the country that would even contemplate putting an offer like this on the table as we're all too health conscious and pc here. The fact is, the challenge is ridiculous, dangerous and brilliant. The fact that these people are having a go at something so stupid and not giving a sh!t is just fine by me.

      • some people need to get a grip! These are just a challenge, its a bit of fun. Do you same people slag countries that offer sky diving experiances? thats contributing to cardon emessions so is that make them countries idiots? what about australia's scuba diving at the great barrier reef? Get a life, if you dont like it dont look at it! And no Im not american, Im not fat, BMI 20, and I would still do these challenges if offered, have done one in newcastle with a curry. Have scuba dived great barrier so dont take that as an insult to australians.

      • HAHA you aussies, kiwis, and brits are all the same.. Its America dammit, just like we dont get why you brits feel the need to have "tea time" and why you aussies eat that horrible vegemite crap and chase around dingos all day, you just dont get that in america we have a thing called the american dream. if someone wants to eat a 7 pound burrito then by god who are you to say otherwise? notice the top competitive eater in the world is a 150lb japanese kid!! you brits are just as fat, and lazy, and drunk, and stupid as we are. your food is so horribly unhealthy and greasy! sorry our country is diverse enough to have food challenges. gee lets go to britain and have a meat pie and banger eating contest, or lets go to australia and see how many kangaroos we can eat. dont be sad because your countries dont have a diverse menu. dont be sad that americans get their kicks from eating mass amounts of food and not chasing wallabies all day or saving the queen. sorry that amerian business owners are smart enough to have food challenges. most of the time people FAIL, putting that 50 bucks for the burger or whatever right back into the pocket of the owner. sorry americans are sooo fat and stupid. just call us the simpsons. im not one for being patriotic, but gee.. before you point your fingers make sure your hands are clean.

      • Beau Jo’s Pizza is so flipping awesome. It's just as good as it looks. When you're finished with your slice, there's honey dipping sauce for the crust, which is waaaay better than it sounds. They have a crazy amount of different sauces and toppings. artichoke hearts, spinach, etc. for tippings and ranch dressing, pesto, garlic creme sauces etc. for pizza sauce. This place is amazing and a Colorado original. Beau Jo’s Colorado Pies, the best in the west.

      • There's a small local joint in Sarasota, Florida named Burritos Mexican Grill, that serves up the best Authentic Mexican food in town. In addition they serve up the biggest damn burrito I have ever seen. They call it the Mongo Burrito and it weighs 8 lbs. The challenger has 45 minutes to clear the plate. If the challenger wins then the meal is free and so is one dinner each month for a year. They have a vidioe on their website. http://www.burritosmexicangrill.com
