    24 Secret Restaurant Menus Revealed

    3/3/2010 in In-Store Shopping, Trends | 284 Comments

Mention "secret menus" and many people think of hidden functions on Blackberries or Xbox games. Actually, secret menus refers to items you can special order at restaurants that aren't mentioned on standard menus.

Some places, like Chipotle Mexican Grills, have a whole secret menu that's limited only by your imagination. On the other hand, In-N-Out Burger's secret menu" is so unsecret it's posted on their Web site. Kind of takes the cool factor out of having the inside scoop, doesn't it?

If you're looking to impress a date or just like that feeling of "knowing the chef," here are 24 restaurants that offer secret menus. Remember, not all may participate in the hidden menu. However, if you try to order something and the server looks at you with a blank look, don't give up. Describe the dish and usually they'll make it for you anyway.

Just keep it under your hat.

      • I work at McDonald's part-time, and someone should really do some fact checking. For example, 80% of McDonald's are franchised and almost none of them in the south (where I work) offer gravy. Also, making the Big Mac with Quarter Pounder meat would INCREASE the cost and calories. Big Macs are made with 1/8 lb patties and QPers are made with 1/4 lb. Also, you can't get anything SMOTHERED in Mac Sauce, you can order a side of fries with a side of Mac Sauce, but anyone who operates a restaurant and knows anything about food cost would stop any worker from SMOTHERING FF. As for the Neopolitan Shake, any shake you order from McDonald's is half vanilla, half whatever flavor you order, so it's nothing special. I don't know many McDonald's with Chocolate ice cream. Again, most of these things are not true, or just common sense, as McDonald's does food inventory atleast once a week and would not have these ingredients just laying around, that's called waste and cuts into profit.

      • Not sure if you guys know it or not, but a Big Mac is actually made with the small patties, the Quarter Pound patties are larger. So it would be with more calories and meat, not less.

      • About the BK "Secret menu. You is wrong. The Veggie Whopper has no meat. The sandwich you describe is a regular menu item called the BK Veggie The "Suicide Burger" is the BK Quad Stacker, another regular sandwich The Mustard Whopper, Rodeo Burger, Chicken Club and Ham and Cheese sandwich are all regional menu items and are sold where BK franchises have agreed to sell them. Other regional sandwiches include chicken Parmesan, chicken cordon bleu, chicken deluxe (mayo lettuce tomato and cheese) and a country pork sandwich. You just need to look this up on Wikipedia or BK's website

      • Just to correct--the Veggie Whopper at Burger King does NOT have a veggie patty--they simply remove the beef patty from a Whopper and serve you a delicious lettuce sandwich instead. Yuck. Vegetarians should chose the BK Veggie instead, which can come as a combo with fries and a drink if you ask!

      • Just a few starbucks corrections.... I have worked at starbucks 3 years at several different locations and I have never heard chocolate frapuccino base, almond syrups was discontinued probably a year and a half to two years ago and the Zebra mocha is also know as a marble mocha.

      • Sadly, we can't get the Cheesy Gordita Crunch year-round at my local Taco Bell. They do have everything needed to make it, but usually refuse unless it's officially available.

      • I don't think you can order the "poor man's latte" at most Starbucks stores anymore, as they've added the "double shot" to the menu, which is the same thing over ice. It is cheaper, but most stores won't let you order this. And another name (the official one) for the zebra mocha is a marble mocha macchiato. It's white chocolate on the bottom, espresso/milk and the darker chocolate drizzled on top. I don't think I've ever heard of a red tux mocha... people usually just tell us that's what they want, without using that name for it.

      • I have always faithfully ordered the Pizza Sub from Subway, from back when it was on the menu. I just kept ordering it, and while some people have been confused, some have gotten it. I once had a guy tell me that they "didn't make that anymore", so I asked for a custom sub, on Italian, with pepperoni, marinara, and cheese only. The look on his face once he had finished making it was priceless. :D

      • As someone who is a wage-slave of the Pippi Longstocking clone and has been for quite a long time, I can definitely say the author here Did Not Do The Research on #23. I've never heard of the Grand Slam (at least in a Wendy's context as opposed to the Denny's item by the same name)..that'd be a Triple with an Extra Patty (and waaay too much meat in any case. People have enough trouble fitting a Triple into their mouths as it is). I've never heard of the Barnyard, either--though I can think of a couple of my co-workers who'd like it, though I've never gotten into the 'beef and chicken on the same sandwich' thing. Big Bacon Classic...that's about the only one that even comes close to being 'secret', as it hasn't been off the menu that long, and is still in the register system. Jr. Cheeseburger Deluxe...hmmm. I can't remember offhand if we stopped listing it as a separate item or not, since all it is is a 'Jr. Cheesburger with everything'. If anything, it may be the other way around, with the listing *being* the Deluxe, and you have to order the older style (ketchup, pickle, onion and mustard) special. I know that's what happened with the double-stack (or as it's now known, 'The Double Junior Cheeseburger Deluxe' *does quick check* Actually, the www.wendys.com site lists the Jr. Cheeseburger Deluxe as a separate item, the double stack (though our store menus don't call it that anymore), *and* the 'Bacon Deluxe Single" (and Double and Triple) which is basically the Big Bacon Classic with a different name (not sure if we show that on the menus at work though). And that 'Value Crispy Chicken Club' is just flat out wrong. That sandwich is the 'Crispy Chicken Deluxe', plain and simple (I ought to know, I've gotten them for myself often enough) and while it is a reduced cost compared to the standard Chicken Club (which uses the regular chicken patty, not the 'junior-sized' Crispy), it costs *more* than the regular Crispy Chicken (which lacks the cheese and bacon) unless you get it in the Combo (I think--last I knew the Crispy and the Crispy Deluxe *combos* were the same price, and were also the same price as the Double Junior Cheesburger Deluxe combo, but they may have changed that--I don't do cashier, so don't check the menu as often anymore. :-) ) What does amuse me is that a couple of actual 'secret' items were completely overlooked--the 'Veggie Burger' (which is just a Junior with the meat patty removed, leaving the mayo and vegetables). I can't remember if we still have the 'BLT sandwich' in the system or not, though I doubt it as it's too easy to confuse with the BLT *salad*. Of potential interest to some people is the other 'secret' option, which is to request a burger without a bun--it gets served in one of the side-dish trays that we use for the Wings and the Side Salads.

      • I worked at Starbuck's for years, and the "poor man's latte" is a pitiful excuse for a "latte." I tried it after watching so many cheap customers make them on the sly. DO NOT TELL THE BARISTA THAT YOU ARE DOING THIS -- It's really gross and you'll look proud to be cheap, and really, you might as well pony up the extra 50 cents for fresh milk, not the lukewarm carafes at the condiment bar!!! A french press can be done in store for you, but it costs several dollars. Everything but the tux mocha and red eye is something that you will look like an idiot asking for. Short is a SIZE, not a secret, and while a SBUX hasa "just say yes" policy to putting whatever you want in your drink (like biscotti in a frap), it does not come out as anything worth tasting, trust me.

      • Even though I haven't been to an In-n-Out in 2 years (last time I visited home), I am almost certain that they no longer cater the 100 x 100 burger. The largest in the "M x C" burger range (first number is meat patties, second number is cheese slices - so a 2 x 4 is two patties and four cheese slices) that they still make is the 8 x 8. Which I will be ordering, animal-style, on my next trip home.

      • Many of these aren't even secrets, as they're on the menu. Arby's French Dip and Chicken Cordon Bleu are still regular menu items where I'm located. Same with the Peanut Buster Parfait from DQ, and the Rodeo Burger from BK. I'm also pretty sure that your BK "Suicide Burger" is just a BK Quad Stacker (which is also 4 patties, 4 pieces of cheese, bacon and special sauce). Trying to order a McGangBang from McDonalds will probably just get you a lot of weird looks. It's more of a stoner-creation made popular by the internet than a "secret menu" item.

      • You know...on reading through this again, I'm thinking that a good portion of these 'secret' items (the ones that aren't just plain items that are out-of-season/disconinued/replaced) are...pretty much BS. They're not 'secret' items, they're just combinations of regular items that have gotten popular enough to have a recognizable nickname, not any sort of 'hidden' option in the register system.

I don't expect they'd have a clue what I was talking about if I tried to order it in California. Not to mention that they don't have the cheese curds -- or, you know, the fries. • Never heard of gravy at McDonald's. Must be an American thing. Someone was talking earlier about Quarter Pounder versus Big Mac. Quarter is (oviously) 1/4 lb. of meat. Big Mac is made with 2 1/10 lb. patties for a total of 1/5 lb. Take them to LCD and you arrive at 5/20 for the Quarter and 4/20 for the Big Mac. So no matter which way you look at it, making a Big Mac with quarter meat is not decreasing calories, but the opposite. I find a lot of people ask for "like a mac". So much so that a button has been added in some cases to charge for that. What that means is: No Ketchup, No Mustard, Add Lettuce, Add Mac Sauce. Another item is the Big Xtra. I'm not sure if any places still serve this item, but it's a Quarter Pounder with Cheese - No Mustard, Add Mayo, Add Lettuce, Add Tomato. And remember when you're waiting in line: 9 times out of 10 it's the customers in front of you who want a price check on every combination of items on the menu before deciding they only want a free glass of water that makes your wait long. Don't yell at the staff; they're as annoyed at those people as you are.

      • The ranch burrito from Taco John's is made with ground beef. (I've never heard of it with chicken or steak.) It only has the beef, lettuce, tomatoes and, you guessed it, ranch dressing in the burrito. It's actually pretty delicious. You can get it most places since they still have ranch for dipping potato oles. And it's still a menu item in parts of the Dakotas and Montana. I've never had a problem getting a cheesy gordita crunch at any taco bell in the Midwest or the East Coast whether they are officially on the menu or not. The most interesting thing on here is the poutine at KFC. That is good to know!

I have lived in many southern locations including North Carolina, Tennessee, Arkansas, Texas, and Oklahoma....ALL states of which offer biscuits and gravy. As I have worked FULL time for McDonalds for a total of 2 years. • Amazing how people will go through all these semantic turns and hybrid upgrades in an unrelentless quest to convince themselves that the slop they are served at these fast food joints is worthy of such detail. If people would brown bag it a little more and learn to enjoy fruits and vegetables they would be healthier and wealthier. Then they could go out once in a while to a real restaurant and ask a real waiter for food that is not on the menu. Substituting mustard for mayo or doubling up on frozen beef patties is to gastronomy as what drinking ripple and mad dog is to fine wine enjoyment.

What really amazes me is this is such simple stuff I thought everyone knew it! Also I believe a Monster Mac only has 4 beef patties thus doubling the amount of beef. Heck the burger you have pictured for a Monster Mac doesn't even have the proper Big Mac bun.

For someone with kids who are picky eaters, it's nice to know that some places offer grilled cheese. And, In-n-Out does not serve the 100x100 - my drunk brother in law tried to order it not too long ago and ended up with the 4x4 and Animal Fries instead (he passed out before he could eat it).

      • McDonalds do 'doubles' for example double quarter pounder with cheese. You just need to ask, and if they say they no longer do that, ask for the duty manager to confirm that they do. Just like any restaurant you can ask for reasonable variations on their sandwich menu such as no pickle, extra relish, no mayo etc. Remember, the customer is always right!

They call it "tenth meat" and it comes in the boxes with RED lettering and graphics, whereas the "quarter meat" comes in boxes with blue graphics and lettering. Since going to the clamshell-style grills, McDonalds has not sold 1/8lb patties at all.

      • I worked for Dairy Queen in high school. First of all, they're mostly (all?) franchises. At the locations in my hometown, the banana split Blizzard, chocolate chip Blizzard, and Peanut Buster Parfait are all standard, posted menu items. Incidentally, they're also the only items I've ever heard of on that list. Second, the store owners decide what toppings to stock. For instance, we didn't stock blueberries, cherries, raspberries, or butterscotch cone dip in spite of the fact that those are staples at other locations. I suspect that if you sidle up to any random DQ and order, say, that lavender blue sundae, it'll be a real crap shoot as to whether or not your server will have any clue what you're asking for.

      • Look, I have no interest in the secret menus of any restaurant; fast food just isn't that important to me. And, I have to say, I am a bit surprised by the rabid response of the people responding who seem to take personally any suggestions that a fast food restaurant that they visit regularly might offer different menus in different areas. I am just surprised, I guess, by the level of passion with which you all responded. Anyway, I dropped in only to say to the author of this Sherpa thing that the ice cream treat to which he/she is referring is a "sundae" and not a "Sunday" as was used several times on this site. I am a bit saddened that in the cry of foul by all of the people responding here who disagreed with the list of menu items, only one other person seemed to notice what should be an embarrassing mistake made not only once, but several times. Oh well; I guess that isn't so important in the scheme of things. I will let you all get back to your food fight. Enjoy!

      • This would have been a better article if it just listed the many regional variations that really are available. Too bad that most chains are not smart enough to try some of the popular ones in one area in another region. I used to live in the West Indies and it was kind of cool to go into a KFC, McD, or other chains and get Creole, indian or tropical fruit versions of regular items. One item I wish I could still get was Carl's Jr. California Roast beef, I twas shave meat like Arby's a whole mild roasted green ortega chili, jack cheese on an onion roll. It was awesome.

Certain items ARE on their POS system (but not on the menu) so you can order them and they can be rung up including White Gummy, Pink Star(burst), and Strawberry Shortcake. My favorite is the PB

      • As far as what other people have been saying, many of these items listed are actually regular menu items. The only ones that are "Secret" are the In-n-Out ones, and even those are just to hype up the place because most people already know of them and they are listed on their website. One thing that is not always the same is the BK Veggie Whopper. I used to get them a lot, before they were advertised on the menu, which they are now, and they were made with a layer of onion rings instead of a veggie patty. I used to get these from 1995 to 1999 at the Burger King in Saratoga, California in the Westgate West shopping center until they released the "Veggie" burger and then refused to make it the old way. The Jamba Juice items are real too, but not everyone knows how to make all the drinks. I have ordered all of those Taco Bell items directly off of the main menu. One of my favorites used to be a Chili Cheese burrito and and enchirito with a sierra Mist.

      • Just to clear up some confusion...yes, many fast food restaurants in all areas of the country have "gravy" in the sense of sausage and cream gravy, for breakfast...but the gravy usually used in poutine is brown gravy, similar to what is usually served with Salisbury steak. I'm a chili cheese burrito devotee myself. Anyone remember when it was called the Chilito? When they changed the name I got some strange looks for a while until a nice employee explained. It is still on the menu at all the Taco Bells I've gone to here in the Midwest, and even during the brief break during the name change you could still order it even though it wasn't on the menu (new plastic menu inserts on order, I imagine).

      • Wow. There are some REALLY MEAN people leaving comments here. Didn't their mothers teach them that if they couldn't say something nice, not to say anything at all? What is WRONG with people? Contrary to what they think, not all people, or even Americans, who sometimes eat fast food are fat. Some are, sure, but so are some of the people shopping at the local organic farmer's market. Believe it or not, but there are fat and thin people everywhere. Also, there are people of every size, shape and color that enjoy fast food in every place that has it, NOT just in the U.S.

      • Oh, one more thing I forgot-- feeding people IS most assuredly a "meaningful contribution," from everyone from the farmers and ranchers who grow our food, the truckers who move our food, the packers and processors who package our food and, yes, the cooks who cook our food. I grew up on a working cattle ranch and rice farm and my Dad taught me early on that growing people's food was one of the most honest AND HONORABLE of all professions! Never forget that It is truly IMPORTANT work, even if the pay for most of those valuable jobs IS crap. Those who look down on the people who do these jobs should have to TRY getting through life without us. We won't miss all you lawyers, MBAs and other educated idiots when you starve. I'm sure the cashiers are capable of warning their customers on excessive caloric value - disclaimer, signature, and all. "customizing your order MAY cause death or erratic pseudo-legal threats."" ... Seriously though, by working at taco bell, I found that Managers dont take kindly to denying a customer add-ons while telling them how poisonous their food is.

It used to be on the menu a while back, then it disappeared -- but I don't think I've ever had a McDonald's not know what I was ordering.

      • McLeprichon? That is complete nonsense! First, it's called a Shamrock Shake. It was an official menu item in the 1970s, '80s, and '90s around the month of March ONLY until McDonald's dropped the ball and stopped carrying it at most restaurants because they were too busy making hip '90s ad campaigns marketed at urban Americans. They re-released it nationally in 2006 as the Shrek Shake for the third installment in the Shrek film series, and even then not every McDonald's carried it. Fast-forward to now: I have asked for this fucking thing EVERY MARCH at every McDonald's in a twenty mile radius and NONE of them carry it. By the way, I just want to reiterate how much of an idiot you are for calling it a McLeprichon.

That's not what the condiment bar milk is for. I'm all for saving money, but don't be cheap. Spent the extra 80 cents or whatever it is and get a latte. The whole menu actually differs state by state and even different citys in the same state have a different lineup. A few favorites: Hand Held Heartattack: 4 x 4-1 patties, 4 x bacon, 5 x cheese on a quater pounder Stupidity: 6 x angus patties on a Mighty Angus The Ark: 2 of every animal ( 2 x 4-1 patties, 2 x chicken patties, 2 x bacon, 2 x fish patties) McFlurry with the lot: Ice cream with oreo pieces, mini m

      • Actually, what they were saying is that Burger King does not carry or sell a "veggie patty". When asked for a Veggie Whopper, BK simply gives you a whopper, minus the meat. So, it is YOU who "is wrong"!

      • LOL @ all the people who say they don't eat and/or care about fast food. Well....you obviously cared enough to read and comment. AngrySteve: "And all the current or ex employees of the said chains, if you're such a expert, shouldn't you be a Assistant manger by now." i am an ex employee of both Dunkin and BK (in both store as well as administrative office)- just because i knew how to do my job, doesn't mean i actually WANTED to be an assistant manager. I worked there when I was younger and left to pursue a college education thankyouverymuch. Some people stay in the fast food biz their whole lives but the reality is that fast food has a really high turnover rate because employees are usually kids looking for part time jobs while they are in HS. Anyway- I can't believe that there was only one other person who mentioned the Coolatta mixes at Dunkin!! My all time favorite was mixing the Orange-Mango with Vanilla. It resulted in creamsicle heaven...

      • For McDonalds, simple things like substitutions should have been made known. In stores that offer a dollar menu, a McDouble is the exact same thing as a double cheeseburger minus one piece of cheese. Also, you can get a couple items from the menu for a bit cheaper( with the dollar menu and substitutions). For example, if you ask for a McDouble with an extra patty and special sauce (and whatever other condiments that are normally included on a big mac) you end up with a big mac sandwich minus the extra piece of bread and a dollar. Learn how to abuse the dollar menu like a red-headed stepchild if you really want to get your money's worth at any fast food chain.

And they are great for adding to the Junior Chicken sandwiches (which don't have the sauce on them) and for adding to the regular McChicken sandwiches because there is never enough sauce on them.

      • I ALWAYS ask for Frozen Hot Chocolate at DQ... Its about 1 out of every 10 times that someone knows what it is and how to make it. Sometimes its even just a matter of getting the right person at the register. I've ordered it before and come back to the same place a week later and been told it doesn't exist... Cest la Vie... it makes it all the more worth it when I successfully procure one. I highly recommend asking next time you're at a DQ.... its absolutely to die for. An interesting note too (which i'm sure is the case with over 50% of the menu items listed here) - Frozen Hot Chocolate, according to my old weight watchers handbook from when it used to be on the menu, is over twice the calories of any other drink DQ makes.....

      • I don't understand the hostility felt toward fast food workers? Just because one works fast food does not mean they are stupid. It just so happens that the many that continue to work fast food are lower educated. But please tell me what teen age people can do for a living with limited hours of availability. But wait, let me back up...what's the point of complaining about that... at least they are working. With the unemployment rate the way it is, we should be proud that there are teenagers out there willing to work and not sitting at home adding to the obesity rate of America. What we should be doing is talking about the health stats of Fast Food and healthy alternatives to fast food. In regards to the secret menu, as already stated by many... most of the items are not secrets. You can go to Arby's or Wendy's and get a side of cheese for your fries for example.

      • Just an FYI, you can only order hot drinks in a short from Starbucks, they don't make cold cups. The only reason short cups exist is for shots of espresso or macchiatos. Also, there is no such thing as chocolate frapp base. That's just creme base with mocha syrup added. You can't add a biscotti to a frapp because it breaks the blades, but if you get the right Barista they'll chop it up for you before they add it in. A Zebra Mocha is actually a Marble Mocha Macchiato. French Presses are available all day any day and cost the same as a standard cup of coffee, but you have to wait for four minutes while it steeps, so not good in a hurry. And if you add one or two espresso beans to a coffee frappucino, it's really fantastic. OH and if you order a shaken black tea, and substitute half of the classic pumps for peppermint, it tastes like iced refresh without having to wait as long.

Yum. Krystal: Order a double Krystal with extra pickles and mustard. Yum, yum. Rally’s: Order a $1.25 (or is it $1.29) Rally burger with extra lettuce and tomato (free). Also, order a Rally burger hold the meat, with extra mayo, for a cheap lettuce and tomato sandwich. Taco Bell: Order a bean burrito with (free) triple onions. Add the medium sauce. But then the McD's there also sell, or used to anyway, cajun fries as a regular trade out option for plain fries and I haven't seen that anywhere else. And people calling this list a stoner's wet dream- that's an insult to stoners everywhere. I'm a stoner and the only thing on this list that I would eat is the Veggie Burger from BK. The ones here in NM use Gardenburger patties and they're really good. And the Taco Bells here all offer green sauce and they'll make anything vegetarian for you if you ask. And the chili cheese burrito is called the Enchirito- it's right on the menu, no big secret.

You can build sandwiches at many restaurants that aren't off the menu, which is the same with starbucks and jamba juice. Since I work at Jack in the Box, trust me, just ask, we enjoy it when people try something different. They'll do whatever, just try it! BTW i tried to buy the chicken cordon blu at Arby's, but when i went back, they had taken it off the menu. So, I asked if they still had it, and they said no. Like all franchise or chain restaraunts, it might be different from store to store.

I once thought what you all thought about 5 yrs ago when I picked up my son from his football game when he asked me to stop at McDonald's for a McGang Bang. Yet they have it, and my son loves it. When I saw the news cast I just laughed, because as stupid as it sounds, it is true. I don't remember any of the comments in which she stated that the names were great or anything about calories. One more thing, as for restaurants adding stuff to orders due to items either selling or getting thrown away, THAT IS WITH ANY RESTURANT as well as my kitchen refrigerator. Oh, and by the way, I eat an order of biscuits and gravy every friday. (it's my cheat day) So don't comment on things that you are little aware of.

But, at some point in the last 20 years, they were test items you "had to know someone" to get. If they prove that people actually want something like that, then it eventually moves on to the regular menu, typically replacing a slower selling item. So go on about how out dated it is, and then remember that some of us are not so young that we dont remember when the McRib was a secret item available all the time.

At Steak 'N Shake I learned to make a pretty mean "fettuccini alfredo:" sliced chicken breast over plain (chili mac) noodles, with cream of broccoli soup standing in for the sauce and a bit of parmesan sprinkled over the top. Anything but the same damn salad every night. Also, I'd recommend anybody without a heart condition try this once: order a shake with *real* ice cream. Shakes are usually made with a nonfat "shake base," but substituting full-fat vanilla is a revelation. Taste at your own risk!
