Love Super Bowl parties but hate the temptation of the snack table? It's massively easy to snarf down hundreds of calories as the tension mounts, and this year's game will -- hopefully -- prove to be a real nail biter, (particularly if Colts defensive end Dwight Freeney is sidelined by his ankle).
We've compiled a list of 10 delicious, low-calorie and healthy treats that will help you keep your hands off the pizza. Most are available at your local health food store, co-op, or online at the indicated Web sites.
1. Salba Smart Natural Snacks
This Mama Cooks is on a campaign to lose weight in a healthy way. Naturally, she's going to sit as far from the snack table during the Super Bowl. Instead, she's bringingSalba Smart natural snacks like tortilla chips, salsa, potato chips and pretzels. Salba is an ancient grain popular in the distant past as a high energy "running food" that was also prized as a trade commodity. Their snacks are gluten free, raw, vegetarian/vegan, non-GMO and non allergenic. You can buy Salba Smart products online at efoodpantry.com and at most health food stores. "This Mama" also has a really neat, step-by-step post about how to avoid overindulging on Super Bowl Sunday.
2. Pizza Fusion
This eco-friendly company offers healthy, non-gluten pizzas made from fresh, all-natural and organic ingredients, including roasted steak, free-range chicken, Portobello mushrooms, soy cheese, etc. Pizza Fusion has 19 locations across the country and continues to grow via franchises.
3. Fiber Gourmet's Lite Cheese Snacks
They look and taste like the addictive Cheez-It's but have -- literally -- half the calories! At $0.72 per ounce, they're actually cheaper than the commercial cheese snacks, which cost $0.99 per ounce.
4. Pirate's Booty Bermuda Onion
If you love Funyuns, this puffed rice and corn snack makes a great alternative. You can enjoy the taste of green chives, garlic, and sweet Bermuda onions for 130 calories per one-ounce bag (That's half the calories of Funyuns). These snacks are baked (as opposed to deep fried), vegan friendly, all natural and trans-fat and gluten free,
5. Yoplait Yoplus Light Yogurt
Not everyone considers yogurt a snack but I'm addicted to its creamy texture and the multitude of flavors available. Frugal Rhode Island Mama reviewed Yoplait's newest product and said, "It’s amazing to think the YoPlus Light has one-third fewer calories than the regular yogurt because this was just as smooth and creamy and full of flavor as the regular yogurt." Don't forget to take advantage of the link to a $1 off coupon at the end of Frugal Mama's post.
6. Pop Chips
Born2Impress blogger calls Pop Chips "the next generation of potato chips." Instead of frying or baking them, they (of course) pop them by combining heat and pressure. These all-natural snacks contain no grease, artificial colors or preservatives. Pop Chips are available in grocery and health stores and come in seven different flavors. My favorite is Parmesan Garlic.
7. Sonoma Crisps Apple Sticks
Dried fruits leave me cold (har har) but these puppies are much more fulfilling as a snack. They're slow baked, not dehydrated or fried. Danica's Daily blog claims "There is not a single drop of oil in any of their products ~ how awesome is that?! But, wait, it gets better. Each bag contains the equivalent of 1-1/2 apples. Now that is a really nice size portion for only 70 calories."
8. Good Health Humbles
Store-made hummus is a hit or miss thing, usually a watery miss. Good Health has the right idea, though. Their Baked Hummus Chips combine both elements in one easy serving. GrubGrade blog says these chips are "Baked to a crispy-crunchy golden brown, with only 4 or 4.5 grams of fat per serving." Flavors include Olive Oil, Lemon & Feta; Roasted Red Pepper; and Sesame Garlic. While you're at it, check out Good Health's Peanut Butter Pretzels. I haven't tried them but that sounds like a great combination.
9. Sweets Under 50 Calories
Heart Healthy Living lists 20 sweet snacks for 50 calories or less. The blog post details, "the calorie, cholesterol, fat, and sodium facts for each snack, plus brand names to make your shopping super simple."
10. WildSide Bite Size Salmon Dog Treats
Don't forget all those dogs roaming the party. If you don't want them grabbing food off the barbecue grill, stock up on these all-natural, wild salmon treats. They're hypoallergenic and suitable for the most sensitive of pups.
