Football players, coaches and commentators are rarely the pithiest of speakers. They tend to spout the same hackneyed phrases week after week. My favorite is: 'We came here to win, today."
Former Bronco's Head Coach Dan Reeves was the king of the say-nothing quote. If I had a nickle for every time he began a long ramble with, "“If I had it to do over again...," I'd bet on the Saints to win this year's Super Bowl.
But every now and then, a jock of fan lets down their guard and gives us a really juicy, lame quote. We came up with our 10 favorite Super Bowl quotes to amuse you while waiting for the game to start.
1. Herb Adderly, Packers Corner Back
(When asked if he would rather play the game in Los Angeles or Miami) "I'll play anywhere for $15,000."
2. Duane Thomas, Dallas Cowboys quarterback
"If it's the ultimate game, how come they're playing it again next year?"
3. John Heisman, coaching legend
"Gentlemen, it is better to have died as a small boy than to fumble this football."
4. Bill Peterson, Houston Oilers Head Coach
Giving a pep talk, "Men, I want you just thinking of one word all season. One word and one word only: Super Bowl."
5. A Fox Sports reporter to Washington Redskins Quarterback Doug Williams
"How long have you been a black quarterback?"
6. Deion Sanders, NFL Network commentator
On why he didn't like the two-week break between the conference championship games and the Super Bowl: "Having two weeks off gives family, friends, and the media more time to get on your nerves."
7. Joe Theismann, ESPN announcer and retired NFL quarterback
"Nobody in football should be called a genius. A genius is a guy like Norman Einstein." (Norman? Is he related to Albert?)
8. George Rogers, former New Orleans Saints running back
“I want to rush for 1,000 or 1,500 yards, whichever comes first”
9. Matt Millen, Raiders left back
(After hearing that Redskins OG Russ Grimm had said that he would run over his own mother to win the Super Bowl) "I'd run over Russ Grimm's mother to win the Super Bowl, too."
10. Julie Brown, MTV Reporter, to Dallas Cowboy Emmitt Smith
Prior to his 1993 Super Bowl game against Buffalo, "What are you going to wear in the game Sunday?
