National Donut Day is Friday, June 2, and many popular confectioners are offering free donuts, doughnuts and do-nuts in honor of this event.
While celebrating fried dough at the start of bikini season might seem like a cruel joke, National Donut Day dates back to World War I, when Salvation Army volunteers (called "Donut Lassies") provided coffee and doughnuts to soldiers on the battlefield. Today, National Donut Day celebrates America's favorite breakfast food while raising awareness and funds for The Salvation Army.
Without further ado, here's a roundup of doughnut/donut/do-nut shops and brands offering freebies this Friday.
LaMar's Donuts - With over two dozen locations in the west and midwest, LaMar's Donuts is offering "any donut with a hole" for free on June 3 when you print a Golden Ticket from their website. The chain is also hosting a Dronuts Sweepstakes for a chance to win a drone (first place), one dozen donuts per month for a whole year (second place), or a $25 LaMar's gift card (third place, 10 winners).
Dunkin' Donuts - One of the most recognized doughnut shops is offering a free-ish deal on National Doughnut Day. Get a free doughnut of any variety with purchase of a beverage from participating stores. If you’re feeling adventurous and indulgent — and who isn’t while visiting Dunkin’ Donuts? — try their new S’mores flavored coffee, which rolls out on National Donut Day.
Krispy Kreme - Enjoy a mouthwatering Original Glazed doughnut, or any doughnut of your choice, for free from any Krispy Kreme in the U.S. and Canada.
Shipley's Do-Nuts - Visitors to Shipley's Do-Nuts between 5am and 12pm on June 2 get a free Glazed Do-Nut with their purchase, with part of the day's proceeds going to the Greater Houston Salvation Army. Shipley's has locations in Texas and other parts of the south and southeast U.S.
Ducks Donuts - With locations along the East Coast (and one lonely shop in Houston, Texas), Ducks Donuts provides made-to-order donuts for the freshest and most customized experience. On June 2, customers receive a free donut of their choice with purchase, and those who keep their receipts can redeem them for BOGO free half-dozen donuts at a later time.
Meijer - Meijer shoppers who purchase a bakery item on June 2 will be treated to a free donut.
Entenmann's - Everybody's favorite grocery store donut brand is hosting a National Donut Day Sweepstakes on Facebook, offering one lucky winner free donuts for one year. The brand's parent company, Bimbo Bakeries USA, will donate $1 to Feeding America for every entry received, up to $10,000. Additionally, residents and visitors to New York City on Friday, June 2, can score a free donut and chance to win a prize at Times Square as part of Entenmann's National Donut Day event.
Doughnut Plant - With four locations in New York City, Doughnut Plant is revered for its delicious donuts with such creative flavors as matcha green tea and peanut butter banana cream. Hungry yet? Doughnut Plant is giving away a free Carnival Sprinkles mini cake doughnut (while supplies last) on June 2.
Cumberland Farms - South Florida residents and visitors can score a free doughnut when they buy hot or iced coffee, or a Chill Zone beverage, between 5am and 10am on Friday at any new concept store.
Honey Dew Donuts - Get a free donut and raise awareness to the worthy cause of supporting cancer patients and their families through the Joe Andruzzi Foundation.
