From the hand-written cardboard signs to the advertising chants of small voices, there’s nothing that symbolizes childhood summers quite like lemonade stands. These mini business ventures have helped kids earn extra dollars for decades, but there’s way more to the lemonade stand industry than meets the eye.
Inspired by the ingenuity of small businesses in America, Lemonade Day became a national holiday in 2007 to help promote leadership and entrepreneurship in children. Every year on August 20, kids are challenged to develop, plan and run their own business in the form of a lemonade stand. Now celebrating its 10th year, Lemonade Day has inspired over 1 million children across North America to step up and create a small business.
Many other organizations now participate in Lemonade Day to raise money for children and ensure kids are successful. While we encourage you to seek out lemonade stands in your community this Sunday, we also don’t want you to miss these freebies and events happening on #NationalLemonadeDay!
Red Robin. Every year, Red Robin celebrates National Lemonade Day with Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation (ALSF). This non-profit organization was developed in 2000 by four-year-old Alex Scott to raise money for childhood cancer research. Alex had been fighting cancer since age 1, and wanted to help others like her.
Her legend lives on, and ALSF now funds grants in over 120 institutions, and has raised over $140 million since 2000. Visit your local Red Robin on Sunday for freckled lemonade, and to donate to the foundation.
Ruby Tuesday. Stop by Ruby Tuesday for half-price non-alcoholic lemonades! Popular flavors include mango, peach and strawberry. For every lemonade purchased, Ruby Tuesday will donate 10 cents to No Kid Hungry, an organization that provides nutritious meals to children in need.
Charleys Philly Steaks. Charleys locations are offering a free original lemonade with any Philly purchase on August 20! The offer is valid from 11am to 9pm Eastern Time.
Hot Dog on a Stick. If you’re one of the lucky first 50 customers to visit Hot Dog on a Stick on Sunday, you’ll receive a free glass of “hand-stomped” lemonade! If you don’t make it in time for free lemonade, you can get a free Turkey Dog on a Stick with any lemonade purchase when you mention their Facebook event.
Penn Station East Coast Subs. Visit Penn Station on Sunday for a free signature hand-squeezed lemonade! This offer is valid with any sub purchase.
Natalie’s Orchid Island Juice Company. If you live in New York, you’ll get a chance to try Natalie’s Natural Lemonade for free! This Florida-based juicery makes all-natural lemonade with only three ingredients: sugar, lemons and water. They will be giving out free samples at Do Cookie Dough Confections in Greenwich Village and at Dessert Goals in Williamsburg, Brooklyn on August 20.
